    PHILIP AND KATHERINA "KATIE" WANNER

Philip Wanner was born on a farm near Eureka, South Dakota in McPherson County
on June 6, 1908 to Karl and Elizabeth (Deigel) Wanner. He was the youngest of
eight children. Philip passed away November 13, 1974.

Philip was raised in the Eureka area, living and farming with his parents. On
November 25, 1928 he married Katherine "Katie" Oberlander at Zion American
    Lutheran Church in Eureka.

    Philip and Katherina Wanner

Katie was born August 19, 1908 to Adam and Elizabeth (Steigelmeier) Oberlander
on a farm 15 miles southwest of Eureka. As a young girl Katie lived on the farm
with her parents. She attended rural school in Campbell County to the seventh
grade, then worked for various farmers as their hired girl. Katie had five
brothers: Fred, Paul, Jake, Gottlieb and Adam and three sisters: Magdalena
Ackerman, Pauline Bauer and Helen Kiesz.

Philip and Katie lived on their first farm five miles southwest of Eureka. Here
their first three children were born: Harvey, Delores and Duane. In 1939 they
moved to a farm three miles south of Eureka where another son, Donald, was
born. In 1946 Philip and Katie decided to sell their farm machinery and
buildings and move to Eureka. They moved their house to town which is presently
owned by Marvin Moser. Two years later their youngest child, Shirley, was born.

After moving to Eureka Philip began employment at the Eureka Experimental Farm
and Katie did housekeeping and cleaning for various families. In 1951 Katie
began her employment as housekeeper for Dr. and Mrs. George F. McIntosh and
also as cleaning lady for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Office. She held
these positions until her retirement in 1973. Philip retired after working at
the Experimental Farm for about twenty-two years.

The most favorite pastime for Philip and Katie was visiting friends and
neighbors and playing cards. They also spent many hours fishing at Lake Eureka
or Wolff's Dam. During the summer months Philip spent many evenings shearing
    sheep for area farmers.

Katie was a member of the ALCW and enjoyed crocheting afghans, etc. She was in
ill health for many years before suffering one of several strokes which left
her partially paralyzed. She became a resident of the Eureka Lutheran Home in
1973. Philip joined her at the Home in 1974 where he died that same year. Katie
    passed away in 1979.

Philip and Katie's family include five children and eighteen grandchildren.

Harvey lives in Aberdeen and has eight children; Mrs. LaVern (Delores) Schmidt
lives in Puyallup, Washington and they have four children; Duane lives in
    Eureka; Donald lives at Watertown, South Dakota and they have four children;
