VALENTINE METTLER Born in Kassel, South Russia, in 1862, and arriving in America in 1874, surely qualified Valentine Mettler for the pioneer roll. He accompanied his parents to the new country where they paused in the Yankton vicinity for about ten years. He was married to Anna Marie Hoff in 1883, and the following year they came to McPherson County, settling about 15 miles northeast of the present site of Eureka. The nearest point from which they might obtain what little lumber they needed for the roof of their sod shanty home was Frederick, and from that point it was hauled by the traditional ox team. An incident in connection with that trip for lumber which Mettler made, accompanied by his friend and neighbor, George G. Neuharth, may be related for it is an example of the terrors and thrills experienced by pioneer women in the early days. When the men were away for lumber, Mrs. Mettler and Mrs. Neuharth stayed together in an improvised shelter, constructed of boards, tepee fashion. It was open at both ends for the weather was warm. Mrs. Mettler had a small baby, and before retiring one evening she had hung some of the traditional baby wardrobe on a line to dry. Waking with a start during the night, she saw the white garments waving in the wind. Her overwrought imagination pictured it as in the hands of Indians signaling to another part of their band. She called her companion and the two lay quietly, in an agony of fear, lest the next moment the red skins would enter their shelter and kill them. But soon the light of dawn came and happily proved their fears entirely unfounded. But, oh, what a night for those two women on the wild prairie. The Mettlers had little or no money when they started their farming operations, relying on their industry and frugality to bring them through. Both industry and frugality were needed, for they did not escape the disappointments of poor crops and low prices for the products of their farm. A family of twelve children were born to the Mettlers, nine of whom survive, namely: Fred V., Magdalena (Mrs. Henry Roemmich), McLaughlin, S. D.; Henry and Daniel, Eureka; Bertha (Mrs. August Heupel), Forbes, N. D.; Jacob, Edward, and Fred of Eureka; and Ida (Mrs. John Kirschenmann), also of the Eureka community. Valentine Mettler grew to be a successful man in the conduct of his farming interests and, as a result, was chosen county commissioner, in which position he served from 1906 to 1910. He passed away in 1911, but Mrs. Mettler still resides on the original homestead.

Valentin married Anna Maria Hoff on 4 Jan 1884. Anna (daughter of Heinrich Hoff and Regina Sophia Stöbener) was born on 30 Jan 1867 in Kassel, Odessa, Ukrayina; died on 30 Oct 1940 in Odessa Township, McPherson County, South Dakota, USA; was buried on 1 Nov 1940. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
