    JOHN GILL
The subject of this biography is an American by adoption, but loyal citizen of the United States and a great admirer and earnest supporter of its free institutions. He is a native of Germany, where his birth occurred November 22, 1861. In 1865 he was brought by his parents, Fred and Louisa (Holzinger) Gill to America. Immediately after landing, the family proceeded westward to Huntington county, Indiana, where they selected a home, purchasing a small place in the township of Huntington not far removed from the county seat and where the father engaged in farming. On this place young John passed the years of his youth and early manhood and on attaining his majority he began life for himself as a farmer, leasing land for that purpose. With the industry and thrift characteristic of his sturdy race, he worked diligently, and however much his expenses, he always managed to lay aside a goodly portion of his earnings until in due time he had accumulated sufficient means to purchase a place of his own. He invested his means in a small farm of twenty-eight acres in Clear Creek township, suitable for market gardening and to this he has since devoted his attention with the most satisfactory results.
Mr. Gill pays especial attention to all kinds of small fruits of which he raises only the very best varieties, while the products of his garden, consisting of all kinds of vegetables grown by first class gardeners have long had a line reputation for their excellence. He studies will the wishes of his patrons, and by taking the greatest pains to please them he has built up a large and lucrative trade which continues to increase as the years go by.
Mr. Gill is a scientific gardener, understanding fully the nature of soils and how to obtain therefrom the most profitable results. The neat appearance of his place and its thorough tillage attest the interest he takes in his business, while the beautiful two-story brick dwelling recently erected and other evidences of prosperity speak well for the success which has thus far in life attended him. The same year in which he moved to his present place, 1887, Mr. Gill was united in marriage to Miss Mary Friedman, who has borne him nine children, viz.: Margaret, George, (___), Mary, Eddie, Henry and Herman (twins), Katie and Frederick.
Mr. Gill was educated in the public schools, and in religion is a Catholic. He is a Democrat in politics, and while not an active partisan has done valuable service for his party in more than one campaign. With great energy and endurance he has improved and brought to a state of cultivation his beautiful little farm, improving his mind as he improved his land until he is now one of the most intelligent as well as one of the most progressive German American citizens of Huntington county. He is public spirited in all the term implies advocating all measures for the material educational and moral welfare of the community, and leading in many enterprises calculated to advance the industrial interests of the county. From his youth he has endeavored to shape his life according to the principles of morality which insure good citizenship, and his example should encourage every aspiring youth to feel that, whatever the future has in store, perseverance economy and a conscientious regard for truth will ultimately win a just reward. His life has never deviated from rigid rule of honor that ought to govern every man, and the influence he has exerted for correct living will no doubt bear rich fruitage in the career of others long before hid own has drawn to its close.

History of Huntington County (Indiana), 1914, p810-811 Jacob Karst, whose labor has been the measure of his success, has for some years been numbered among the prosperous agriculturalists of Lancaster township. Years ago he started his operations with no capital save energy, determination, an active body and a strong mind; today he is the owner of 200 acres of valuable land lying five and one-half miles southwest of Huntington. He is, moreover, a citizen who has gained the trust and confidence of his fellow men through a life of industry and integrity, so that he figures prominently in public as well as agricultural circles of his section. Mr. Karst was born in Hancock county, Ohio, April 24, 1852, and is a son of Peter and Anna (Zeigler) Karst. Peter Karst was born in Germany, and as a young man decided to cast his lot with the citizens of the United States, of whose country he heard such glowing tales. Accordingly, he came to this country, and after a short stay in New York, his landing point, made his way to Pennsylvania, where he met and married Anna Zeigler, a native of the Keystone state. Subsequently, they moved on to Hancock county, Ohio, then to Henry county, Indiana, and finally to Huntington county, this state, and in the Spring of 1865 located in Polk township, where Mr. Karst continued to be engaged in agricultural pursuits throughout the balance of his life. He was the father of five sons and four daughters, and of these children four are living in 1913: Peter, who is a resident of Huntington, Indiana; Jacob; Barney W., a resident of Montana; and Sylvester, whose home is in Polk township. Jacob Karst received his education in the schools of Ohio and Indiana, in the vicinities in which the family lived from time to time. He was a lad of thirteen years when brought to Huntington county, and here he assisted his father in the cultivation of the home property, growing up to sturdy manhood and learning thoroughly every branch of the farming industry. He remained as his father?s assistant until he was twenty-seven years of age, and during this time, through industry and right living, through thrift, economy and good management, he saved some $1,200. Deciding to establish a home of his own, he was married in 1879 to Miss Mary B. Miller, of Huntington township, and they began housekeeping on the farm on which they now reside, and on which they have continued to live with the exception of three years when Mr. Karst was looking after the old homestead. The present property of 200 acres has been accumulated by steady industry, and has been brought to a high state of cultivation. Its buildings are substantial and modern in character, its improvements of the best and its machinery of the latest manufacture. The sleek, well-fed and content livestock testifies to Mr. Karst?s abilities as a raiser of cattle, horses and hogs. Mr. and Mrs. Karst are consistent members of the Catholic church of Sts. Peter and Paul at Huntington, and he is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph?s Society. He is a democrat in politics, but has never found time for public office, and had he done so it is doubtful if his quiet and unassuming nature would have allowed him to accept preferment. Mr. and Mrs. Karst have been the parents of twelve children, of whom ten survive in 1913: Anna, who is the wife of Edward Morris, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Florence, who married John Blomeke, of Steuben county, Indiana; Edward J., who is married to Anna Scher and resides in Lancaster township; George, of Lancaster township, who married Edith Scher; and Joseph, Mary, Julius, Jacob, Jr., Catherine, and Vergelia, all single and residing at home with their parents.

Jacob married Maria Barbara Miller on 27 Nov 1879 in SS Peter & Paul Church, Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA. Maria (daughter of Balthasar Müller Miller and Elisabetha Holzinger) was born on 8 Mar 1857 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA; died on 4 Jan 1919 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA; was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA.
