    Mrs. Edith M. Zahm, 82, Rt. 8, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday (April 15, 1980) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

    Mrs. Zahm was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Rosary Sodality. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion Past Presidents Club, Veterans of World War I Auxiliary, a charter member of the 8 at 40, Elks Ladies Club, Huntington County Woman's Club, a Gold Star Mother and a member of the Huntington Memorial Hospital Guild.

    She was born April 24, 1897 in Huntington County to Peter A. and Mary Christman Miller. Her marriage was on June 27, 1917 to Eugene F. Zahm, who died Oct. 17, 1955.

    Survivors include two daughters, Miss Edna M. Zahm, at home and Mrs. Virginia E. Glasson, Indianapolis; three sons, Eldon L. Zahm and Maurice E. Zahm, both of Fort Wayne and Larry E. Zahm, Tuscola, IL.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

    Deceased is a son, Captain Richard E. Zahm, who was killed in action on June 14, 1943 during World War II in New Guinea.

    Friends may call at the Hart Funeral Home, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. and will be led by Rev, Thom Lombardi. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Church, with Rev. James Seculoff officiating, and burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Section C Lot 87E-08.

    Message from War Department to Parents Reports Death of Officer June 14

    Captain Richard E. Zahm, 23, United States Army Air Force navigator in active service since a few days after Pearl Harbor, was killed in action in the southwest Pacific June 14 according to a war department message to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene F. Zahm, 1415 North Jefferson Street, received Monday afternoon. The message, signed by the adjutant general read:

    "The secretary of war desires that I tender his deep sympathy to you in the loss of your son, Captain Richard E. Zahm. Report just received states that he was killed in action on June 14 in the southwest Pacific area. Letter follows."

    Recently Promoted

    The parents have no further word and hod how their son met death is unknown to them. He was only recently promoted to captain from first lieutenant. A V-mail letter from him dated in Australia June 1 arrived the same day as the war department message reporting his death. A comrade of Captain Zahm's in the Pacific fighting who is home with other members of the original 19th squadron wrote the parents from Coral Gables, Fla., under date of June 17 detailing his war exploits. The young officer participated in more that 50 missions against the Japanese and had been awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross and five airmen's medals.

    A requiem high mass for Captain Zahm, will be solemnized at St. Mary's Church at 9 a.m., Wednesday, the Rev. T. E. Dillon, pastor, officiating.

    Captain Zahm was born in Huntington, May 22, 1920, to Eugene F. and Edith M. Zahm. He attended St. Mary's School through the eighth grade and was graduated from Huntington High School in 1938. He attended Huntington College two years, working at the same time with his father, manager of the Allen Insurance Agency. Surviving are the parents, and three brothers and two sisters; Virginia Eloise, 12; Eldon L. 17; Virginia Eloise, 12; Maurice L., 9, and Lawrence Eugene 4.

    The body of Captain Richard E. Zahm, son of Mr.. and Mrs. Eugene F. Zahm, 1415 North Jefferson street, the first of those who lost their lives overseas in World War II to be returned to this city, will arrive here at 12:15 p.m. Friday on Erie train No. 6 and will be met by a military escort from Huntington Post No. 7 of the American Legion for removal to the Robbins Funeral Home where friends may call.

    Funeral services with full military rites, will be held at 9 a.m. Monday with a requiem high Mass at St. Mary's Church. The Rev. T. E. Dillon, pastor, will be celebrant of the mass and burial will be in the family lot at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Section C Lot 87E-07.

    Recitation of the Rosary will be held at the Robins Funeral Home following the Sunday afternoon devotions at the St. Mary's Catholic Church of which Captain Zahm was a member.

    The body of Captain Zahm, who lost his life on New Guinea June 14, 1943, was at rest in the United States Armed Forces Cemetery, Ipswich, Australia, until its removal for return to the United States aboard the USAT Cardinal O'Connell, which docked about February 15, on the west coast. The parents received word, prior to the arrival of the transport from Lt. Carroll J. Grinnell of the Chicago Quartermasters division, of plans surrounding the return of their son's body. A second telegram was received Tuesday notifying them of the time of arrival of the body here.. A military escort will accompany the body from Chicago to this city.

    Captain Zahm was born in Huntington, May 22, 1920, to Eugene and Edith M. Zahm. He attended St. Mary's parochial school through the eighth grade and was graduated from Huntington high School with the Class of 1938. He attended Huntington College two years, working at the same time with his father in the Allen Insurance Agency.
