Bessie was born in Bucklin, Ford, Kansas and died and was buried in Puyallup, Pierce, Washington. She was the mother of five children, four sons (Harold William, Robert Glenn, Ernest Laverne and Earl Eugene) and one daughter (Barbara Patricia). She married Earl William Shaw in Bucklin, Ford, Kansas on 5 Mar 1927. From there they moved back to Hooker, Oklahoma to be near Earl's family. Earl worked as a wheat farmer for several years, and subsequently they moved to Puyallup, Washington in 1935 as family migrated West. Of interest, all four sons served in the military, each in a different branch (Harold-Air Force, Glenn-Navy, Ernie-Army and Gene-USMC). Bessie was considered the family historian as she kept considerable hand written records of the family during her life.
As the oldest child, Earl never went to school to read and write. When he got a job in Washington driving truck, he would bring home his schedule for the next day. Bessie would map out the locations, and then orally provide the routes he was to take. She did this every working day of his life when he had a new location to deliver.
Several summers Bessie would take the kids to the 'berry fields' to pick and earn money for school clothes. She always did canning and made jam for their use, she quilted every blanket in their house.
