Arthur A. "Art" Sayler Ashley, N.D. - Funeral service for Arthur "Art" A. Sayler, 98, of Ashley will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 2, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley. The Rev. Jeff Giles will officiate.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Ashley.
There will be a prayer service Sunday at noon with visitation from noon-3 p.m. at the funeral home and also for one hour prior to the service at the church.
He died May 28, 2008, at the Ashley Nursing Home.
Arthur A. Sayler, son of Andrew and Christina (Stoebner) Sayler, was born Oct. 30, 1909, at Venturia, N.D. This is where he grew up and started school. He graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1928. He then attended summer classes at State Normal and Industrial College at Ellendale where he obtained his teaching certificate.
He was united in marriage to Wolla Odenbach on April 27, 1932, in the Reformed Church Parsonage in Zeeland, N.D. They made their home in Venturia. He taught school at Venturia and in the surrounding area for eight years and was also a recreation supervisor for four years with Works Progress Administration.
He purchased the Venturia Bar and Caf? in 1942, and sold it a year later. He then farmed for two years with his brother-in-law, Edwin Odenbach, at Greenway, S.D. In 1944, he and a partner, Calvin Dockter, started Venturia Oil Company. He was also a substitute mail carrier and in 1945, he was appointed ?War Service Carrier?. Art sold his share of the Venturia Oil Company and in August of 1949, then he was appointed a regular rural carrier and did this for the next 31 years.
He retired June 30, 1974. For 20 years, he was the weigh master every Wednesday at the Ashley Livestock Exchange. Art and Wolla moved into Ashley in 1994.
Art enjoyed baseball, softball, fishing and music. He was a member of the Venturia band as long as they were playing. Art's favorite pastimes included decorating cakes, oil painting, as he was an accomplished artist, and also woodworking.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church at Venturia where he had held various church positions including the church choir director.
Survivors include his wife of Ashley; one daughter, Georgia (Ronald) Brosz of Rapid City; one sister, Ella Wahl of Jamestown; one sister-in-law, Ella Odenbach of Eureka; four grandchildren: Joel (Jane) Schock of Fargo, Dawn (Kevin Phillips) Schock of Redondo Beach, Calif., Rhonda (Phil) Toft of Brandon Valley, S.D., and Paul (Tina) Brosz of Rapid City; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
His parents; one daughter, Jeannine Schock; five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Honorary Casketbearers will be all of his great-grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be his grandchildren, Joel Schock, Dawn Schock, Rhonda Toft and Paul Brosz.
The organist will be Steve Glaesmann and the soloist is Lana Christmann.
