Bio: Merle Floyd Bauer was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Lamont Township, Sheridan County, McClusky, ND, the son of Fred and Louise (Heuther) Bauer. He grew up and attended school in Lamont Township and McClusky, ND. Upon graduating, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Following his honorable discharge, he attended college at North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton, ND. He then worked in printing and journalism. He was employed at the New Rockford (ND) Transcript, and then by Arne and May Gilje, and Allen and Patti Stock, of the Foster County Independent, Carrington, ND. He married Dorothy Hansen of Hankinson, ND, on Oct. 19, 1948, in Wahpeton. They lived in New Rockford until they moved to Carrington on Jan. 1, 1950. On Nov. 12, 1951, he was called to serve again in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict, after which he returned to Carrington. He later entered the insurance business with Ed and Peggy Smith at Central Insurance Agency, Carrington. He retired in December 1991. He refereed many basketball games. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, where he served on the church council and was a choir member for more than 45 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, High School Booster Club, American Legion Post #25, VFW Post #3524 and Carrington Health Center Auxiliary. He was an honorary member of the Chamber of Commerce. He helped start the Little League baseball program and had served as a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed sports and gardening.Merle Bauer died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at MeritCare Health-Palliative Care, Fargo, ND. He was 84 years old. Merle is survived by his wife; a son, Micheal F., San Francisco, CA; and two sisters, Helen Botnen, Billings, MT, and Lillian Elkin, Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and two sisters.Services were held on March 14, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, with the Revs. Bruce Vold and Russ Christiansen officiating.
