JAMESTOWN - Simon Dillman, 87, Jamestown, formerly of Selfridge, died May 21, 2008, at Jamestown Hospital. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Selfridge Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Simon was born July 2, 1920, in Mandan, the oldest child of Frank and Elizabeth (Leingang) Dillman. He attended country school until the ninth grade. When he was 18 he attended CCC Camp. On Nov. 5, 1941, he married Magdalena "Maudie" Landeis. They made their home six miles south of Selfridge, where they farmed until 2000 when they moved to Mandan. In 2007 they moved to Jamestown.
Simon will be remembered fondly for his unique sense of humor, friendly and outgoing personality and compassion for others. He was always willing to give his time to help others and took time to visit people in the hospital. A life-long farmer, he did things the old fashioned way. Simon liked to bring young people to his farm and teach them how to work hard and develop a sense for farming. Pinochle was Simon's favorite game and he enjoyed playing aggressively. Spending time with his family and sharing his great stories leaves many fond memories. A member of county commission in Sioux County for 16 years and Selfridge Knights of Columbus, Simon liked being involved in the community. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left with many fond memories and an example of a life well lived is his wife of 66 years, Maudie, Jamestown; three children, Jerome (Doreen), Salt Lake City, Vonnie (Larry) Brockel, Bloomington, Minn., and Pat (Dona) Minneapolis; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tony (Darlene), Leed, S.D., and Leo (Pauline), Mandan.
Simon was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty and Sr. Scholastica; and five brothers, Joe, Pete, Ed, Frank and Jack.
