ROCKFORD - George B. Hummel, 77, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the home surrounded by his family. Born Feb. 7, 1926 in Savanna, the son of George and Helen Stephan Hummel. Rockford resident since 1946. George married Barbara Charles, July 27, 1950, in Rockford. Employed in 1948 doing administrative work at Rock River Die Casting. In 1950, he was employed by National Lock co. as a salesman in the Rockford area. In 1973, he founded Hydroculture Midwest, a company that produced hydroponic vegetables grown locally. He owned and operated the company until retiring in 1986. George enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; daughters, Holly (Bob) Lembkey, Gretchen Ingram of Westwood Hills, Kans.; son, Chuck; grandchildren, Sarah, Melissa and Elizabeth Lembkey, Willie and Christie Ingram, Annie and Amanda Hummel; sisters, Agnes (Albert) Berger, Mary Ann "Mitz" Lineback of Rockford, Eileen Cook of Mount Horeb, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents; sisters, Genevieve Hummel, Ena Hutton, Irma Skorburg and Dorothy Sutton; and brother, John Hummel.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, in Fred C. Olson Funeral Chapels, North Chapel, 2811 N. Main St., with the Rev. Alexandra Starr officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for memorials to be established at Alzheimer's Association of Rockford, United of Rockford Church and American Cancer Society.
