Aberdeen - Calvin Guthmiller, 92, Aberdeen, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005 at his home. Memorial services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1429 N. Dakota Street, with Rev. Roger Noer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Military Graveside Rites at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Visitation will be at Miller Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, Monday, Jan. 10 from 2 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Calvin Guthmiller was born in rural Leola on Oct. 9, 1912 to John P. and Mary (Krein) Guthmiller. He grew up on the family farm, attended Howard Township Schools and worked on the family farm until he entered the U S Army in October 1942. He served in the Pacific Theatre during WW II where he participated in the first assault waves on both Leyte Island and Okinawa. He was wounded in action in Okinawa and earned the Purple Heart before his discharge in 1946. He married Della Schauer on July 10, 1947 at Aberdeen and they made their home in Leola where he continued to farm and sold insurance for American Family Insurance until 1983. They moved to Aberdeen in 1996. Calvin served on the Leola City Council and was an active member and former commander of the Roy S. Hickman Post of the American Legion and a former member of St. James Lutheran Church in Leola. His hobbies included hunting, playing cards, watching baseball and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife: Della of Aberdeen; one son: Allen Guthmiller of Aberdeen; two daughters: Jo Ann Ferrie (Russell) of Bismarck, N.D. and Mary Kay Frey (Ron) of Canton, Mich.; five grandchildren: Matthew Guthmiller of Aberdeen, Kristin Ferrie, Rebecca Ferrie, John Ferrie, all of Bismarck, N.D. and Andrea Frey Zent (Christopher) of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and three sisters: Martha Rath of Aberdeen, Ella Eichelberg of Aberdeen, and Olive Lapka of Leola. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and five sisters. Casketbearers will be his grandchildren and Chris Zent, Orley Rath, and Kevin Lapka.
