Gerald ?Jerry? Herman, 81, of Marshfield died at St. Joseph?s Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
He was born on June 8, 1922 in Marshfield, the son of Urban and Gertrude (Wiltgen) Herman. He attended Marshfield schools and was a 1940 graduate of Marshfield Senior High School. After his education, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps serving during World War II from Nov. 12, 1940 until his honorable discharge on Nov. 14, 1945. He and Irene A. Yaeger were united in marriage on Nov. 16, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Marshfield. In his early years he was a co-owner and drove transport for Mid-State Oil until 1952. He then began a business now known as Central Burner & Boiler, Inc. which he owned and operated until his retirement in June, 1987. His son Chuck then assumed operation of the business. The Hermans enjoyed spending time at their summer home in Stone Lake. He enjoyed fishing, feeding humming birds, wildlife and growing roses and geraniums. He also followed stock car racing. He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, The Holy Name Society, an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus John Eisen Council #1799, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Badger Aerie #624, the American Legion Post 54 of Marshfield and the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Diane (Jack) Buellesbach of Rice Lake, Chuck (Judy) Herman of Marshfield, Cheryl (Leroy) Kroening of Marshfield and John (Helen) Herman of Marshfield; grandchildren, Wayne Buellesbach, Rod (Rebecca) Herman, Renee (Derek) Mechler, Ryan Herman, Kevin Herman, Becca Herman, and Craig Herman; his great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Logan, Ashley and Ellie; his sister Rita (Arthur) Schonfeldt of Marshfield and Mesa, Ariz.; and a stepbrother Carl (Gloria) Rabe of Potosi, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, Charles Rabe and a brother in infancy.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted on Friday, Jan. 30, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Marshfield, with Rev. Donald L. Meuret officiating, Suzanne Golden as organist, and Michael Gonering as soloist.
Burial: Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Marshfield.
Pallbearers: His grandchildren.
Memorials: Memorials may be designated in his name to Our Lady of Peace Parish.
