December 09, 2007
STANARDSVILLE ? Roger Fisher Herndon Leclere, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, from complications of Lewy Body Dementia at Evergreene Meadows in Stanardsville, Va.
Roger was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Beaumont, Texas, the son of Roger Greathouse Leclere and Ethel Siebert Leclere. He was educated in the Beaumont public schools and was a graduate of The University of Virginia and its Law School. He served in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II and the Korean War.
n 1954, he left the Navy to join the legal staff of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, where, during a 34-year career, he was Special Assistant to the President of the Foundation, Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Legal Officer with responsibility for Corporate and Property Affairs, Chief Financial Officer, and Senior Vice President.
Active in the Democratic Party and in civic and community affairs, Roger was a leader of the movement that resulted in the construction of the Williamsburg Public Library, and was in the forefront of the effort to provide affordable housing in the Williamsburg area.
Roger retired from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1987 and in 1988 moved to Albemarle County, where he continued his involvement in community and historic preservation activities. He was chairman of the Scottsville Precinct Democratic Party, and its candidate for Board of Supervisors in 1996. He was president of the Scottsville Museum until appointed by William Harbaugh to become the Managing Director of Pine Knot, Edith and Theodore Roosevelt's retreat in Keene, Va. He established the Edith and Theodore Roosevelt Pine Knot Foundation, to support the preservation efforts and headed that Board until his retirement from active participation in 2004.
Roger is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha Dabney of Gloucester, Va. He is also survived by four daughters, one son and 11 grandchildren: Sarah Leclere and her husband, Michael Barry, and their children, Anna, Fergus and Malachy, of Northwood, N.H.; Alice Christian Leclere Topp and her husband, Jonathan, and their children, Dabney, Maxwell, Sydney, Charlotte, Zachary and Harrison, of Montpelier, Va.; Mary Keane Leclere of Houston, Texas; Katherine Leclere Coelln and her husband, Scott, and their children, Emily and Samuel, of Williamsburg, Va.; and Edmund Fisher Herndon Leclere and his wife, Kimberly, of Charlottesville, Va.
The family wishes to thank all who participated in his care during the last years of his life, especially Dr. Denise Williams, Dr. David Geldmacher, and the remarkable staff of Evergreene Meadows.
At Roger's specific request, his remains will be cremated. Burial of his ashes and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date, in Williamsburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Roger's name to the Williamsburg Public Library (Friends of the Library), the Edith and Theodore Roosevelt Pine Knot Foundation or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
