Huber Koontz, 89, of Pana, died Monday, December 20, 2010 in Heritage Manor?Pana.
He was born July 23, 1921 in Huber Memorial Hospital, Pana, the son of Huber Koontz, Sr. & Clara (Brodie) Koontz.
Huber was born in Pana, went to Michigan, where he entered the Coast Guard and served during World War II. After the service, he came back to Pana. He had worked in the Pana greenhouses and was employed as a coal miner. He went to work for CAT when they opened in Decatur in 1958, retiring in 1981 after 23 years. Huber was a member of Pana VFW Post #4431; American Legion; Pana Moose Lodge #1015; Pana Sportsmen's Club; & Pana Senior Citizens. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He was an avid gardener and bowler. An important part of his life was being a volunteer. He was the cook for many community organizations and events.
Huber Koontz and Angeline M. Maida were united in marriage in 1943 in Detroit, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife, Angeline Koontz; children: Bette Harlow & husband Pete, Pana and David Koontz & wife Allison, Pana; grandchildren: Sandra Permentier, Normal, IL; Scott Permentier and partner Cliff Pederson, Chicago, IL; Mackenzie Montgomery & husband Nathan, Lincoln, IL; Rory Koontz, Springfield, IL; Delaney Koontz, Springfield, IL; & Quinn Koontz, Pana; and brother: Wesley B. Koontz & wife Thelma "Spud", Pana, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joseph H. Koontz; & brother, Harry John Koontz.
Funeral Information:
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 27, 2010 in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Lawrence Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pana with graveside military rites by Pana Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
