Obituary for Leo "Ole" Joseph Zander
Leo Ole Joseph Zander passed away on July 7, 2013. He was born February 23, 1926, in Glendive, Montana to Joseph and Eugenia (Barth) Zander. His grandparents, German immigrants from the Ukraine of Imperial Russia, settled in western North Dakota. Leo's father was born within months of their arrival in the U.S., while his mother was born near Odessa, Russia.
Leo grew up in Glendive, Montana, and was a star player of both the football and basketball teams. He was a superb athlete, which served him well over his lifetime. Before high school graduation, he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Navy, serving 18 months in the Pacific during World War II and was in the Battle of Okinawa.
After returning to Glendive after World War II, he married Beverly Jean Reed. They were blessed with four children: David, Lynn, Douglas and Lisa. In Leo's early years he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad and later retired as a wheat inspector for the State of Washington. He lived in Pasco for most of the past 55 years. Leo was such a caring and kind man with compassion for others. He joined the Knights of Columbus at age 18 and maintained his membership until his passing. Leo was a founding member of St. Vincent de Paul -- St. Patrick Conference food bank and also one of its longest serving members. He also volunteered for many other church and community activities over the years in the Pasco area.
Leo and Beverly, and long-time friends, Fred and Betty Curtis, all grew up together in Glendive, spent time together as children and in their adult lives. After 58 years of marriage, Beverly passed away in 2003. In 2007, after Fred passed away, Leo and Betty began traveling and spending time together as constant companions, knowing their former spouses would want them to go on living and enjoying life. Their love and devotion to each other was a blessing and comfort for them both over these past years. Leo will be deeply missed by not only his family and community but, especially, Betty.
Leo is also survived by sons David, Bellingham, WA; and Douglas, wife Julie, Orange Park, FL, and their children Jonathan, Katherine, David and Jena; daughters Lynn Price, Richland, WA, and her daughter, Kati; and Lisa, husband Mike Barnett, Treasure Island, FL, and their sons Marcus and Michael. Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, his sister, Clara Price, brother, Peter John, and grandson, Daniel Price.
Rosary will be held at Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home at 1608 W. Court St. in Pasco, Wednesday, July 17th, at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Parish on Thursday, July 18th, at 11:00 a.m. 1320 W. Henry St.; Pasco, WA.
In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to St. Vincent de Paul -- St. Patrick Conference in Pasco at PO Box 4273, Pasco, WA 99302-4273.
