Family services provided by Bauman-Vermilion, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Tower. o Karl Theodore Bender, 69, of Lake Vermilion-Tower and formerly of Coon Rapids, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, in his home. He was born April 10, 1937, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Theodore Henry and Myrtle Violet (Dorsett) Bender. Karl served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a longtime resident of Coon Rapids. He married Robin Denise Hocking on June 10, 1972, in the Church of the Annunciation in Minneapolis and they moved to Lake Vermilion-Tower permanently in 1994. Karl worked as a draftsman for FMC Corp. (Northern Ordnance) followed by years of residential building contracting and automotive repair. Later in the Lake Vermilion area he worked parttime at the Vermilion Club and served on the Greenwood Planning Commission for nine years. He loved fishing, learning at an early age on his trips to Northern Minnesota as a child. Karl was an avid blackjack tournament player at Fortune Bay. He is survived by his wife, Robin; children, Troy (Heidi) Gretz of Prior Lake and Tanda Gretz of Independence, Calif.; and grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob and Jason Gretz.
