Robert Lee Helmberger was born June 6, 1949 in Presho, South Dakota. He was the son of Darold and Eleanor (Thompson) Helmberger. Bob grew up in several small towns, beginning in Presho and including various places in Minnesota. In 1967 he graduated from high school in Menahga, Minnesota. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. On May 29, 1971, he was united in marriage to Ruby Feiock in Mobridge. To this union, a son and a daughter were born: James and Terri. Following their marriage, Bob and Ruby resided in Minot, North Dakota at the Minot Air Force Base. In 1976 they moved to Belle Fourche and Ruby died in 2012. Since then Bob has remained at home in Belle Fourche.
On July 3, 1973, Bob suffered the loss of his leg and arm in a tragic accident. Throughout the rest of his life, Bob showed that despite the obstacles you face in life, you can be an overcomer. Bob used his disability to be an inspiration to thousands of people, young and old. In spite of his physical limitations, Bob was an excellent golfer and pool player. He was an outdoorsman and an active member of the Belle Fourche Country Club where he helped instruct kids in Junior Golf. He was a big fan of football and baseball, the MN Vikings and Twins. Mowing his grass was something he enjoyed, as well as his grandchildren and family. He will be greatly missed by all.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Terri (Dustin) Moross of Belle Fourche, son, James (Jennifer) of Palm Bay FL; 10 grandchildren, Jordan, Alyx, Afton, Chance, Jayce, Calynn, Ray, Jasmyn, Jessica, and Robert; sister, Barb (Gary) Kopacek of Minneapolis, Donna Fossen of Belle Fourche, Nancy Hanson of Summerset SD.
