Bernard Christian Thom, age 90 of the Town of Pine Lake, passed away on Saturday morning, November 20, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on December 22, 1919, in Kenosha County, Wisconsin to Jacob and Lillian (Ludwig) Thom. Bernie attended the School of Agriculture in Rochester, WI; graduating in 1937. He married the former Kathleen Frey on April 3, 1948, in Burlington, WI. They moved to Rhinelander in 1950 and together, they raised their family of five children. Bernie was employed by Modern Farm Supply for 32 years where he served as general manager. Bernie was a faithful and active member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Heart O' Lakes Investment Club and the Rhinelander Country Club for many years. Bernie loved caring and tending for his home, travel, golf, and gardening. Bernie is survived by his wife, Kathleen Thom of Rhinelander; four daughters, Kristine Goedecke of Littleton, CO, Laurel (Glenn) Fischer of Apopka, FL, Ruth (Dr. Robert) Blayney of Littleton, CO, and Tricia (Greg) Tadie of Tacoma, WA; a son, James (Mary) Thom of Freeport, IL; nine grandchildren, Jon and Nicholas Goedecke, Michelle and Michael Thom, Jeffrey and Eric Blayney, and MacGregor, Jack, and George Tadie; a great grandson, Damian Goedecke; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Matthew Thom; two sisters, Helen and Esther; and four brothers, John, Matt, George, and Phillip. A funeral mass for Bernie will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at Nativity of Our Lord / St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father John Gerritts officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of mass on Tuesday at the church. Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) is assisting Bernie's family with arrangements. For those who would wish to honor Bernie, a memorial has been established in his name for the benefit of Nativity of Our Lord Parish and the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing and contributions may be directed in care of his family.
