Martha Handel 101, of Lodi died Jan 10 1999 at a local convalescent hospital. She was born Mar 7 1897 in Menno, SD to Phillip P. and Kathryn (Mettler) Bender.
She was preceded in death by her brothers August, Emil, Bill, Albert Bender, all of Shafter CA. Also her sisters Kathryn (Mrs. F. W.) Handel, Lydia Bender and Ella Bender all of Shaftner CA and Regina (Mrs. August) Mettler of San Jose. She also had two sisters who died as children and they were both named Anna.
In October of 1904, Martha came to California with her parents (who were born in Russia) and settled in a home on Hildreath Lane, near Lodi. She attended the now historic Calaveras School, which has become a part of the Micke Grove Historic Park.
Martha married E. F. Handel of Lodi on Jun 4, 1916. They lived on Alpine road; where they were involved in farming. In 1938 they built a new home in Lodi and moved there to live. E. F. preceded Martha in death on October 19, 1968.
For many years Martha was the "floor lady" in their grape packing shed. She was active in the Victor Farm Home Department, a local 4-H club leader, and a long time member of the Lodi Women's Club. She attended Zion Church where she was active in the Ladies Sewing Circle and participated in many youth group activities.
In 1945, she served on the first Board of Directors of Lodi Memorial Hospital and was a charter member of the Black Prince Auxiliary. Some of Martha's other activities included crafts, baking, sewing, traveling, camping and photography.
She is survived by their only child, Gladys E. (Mrs. Carl B.) Mettler, of Lodi. Four grandchildren; Jim, Clifford, Larry Mettler, and Arlene Thompson, all of Lodi. Also by thirteen great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at Lodi memorial Cemetery on Pine Street, Thursday, January 14, starting at 1:30 pm followed by a memorial service at Zion Church on Ham Lane, at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be at Lodi Funeral Home Tues. 12 to 8 pm, Wed. 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Thurs 8:00 am to 12 noon. Contributions may be made to Zion church for the donor's choice.
