Resident of Concord
Lorraine Guthmiller, nee Gross, was born on a farm near Roscoe, South Dakota, on December 5, 1930. She was baptized and confirmed in the Reformed Church of Hosmer, South Dakota. In 1949 Lorraine married Eugene Guthmiller and the newlyweds moved to the Guthmiller family farm where they began their family. By 1953 Lorraine and her family left the farm eventually to settle in Igloo, South Dakota. In 1965 the family moved to Concord, California, where Lorraine began working for the Mt. Diablo Unified School District as an instructional aid for special education students. She also started a religious program for people with developmental disabilities, three of which received the right of confirmation. In 1992 she won the Grace Calder Award, among other commendations, for her pioneering, educational, and humane work with special education students. Lorraine retired from teaching in 1993 and from her religious work in 1995. Lorraine was preceded in death by her infant son Burton and by her loving husband of 48 years, Eugene. She is survived by her children Renee and Bob Minner, Wayne and Bonnie Guthmiller, Neal Guthmiller, and Twila and Steve Kaye; her grandchildren Cassaundra and Kevin Hein, Matthew and Desiree Minner, Jacob Minner, and Hannah and Alden Kaye; and great-grandchildren Jeremiah, Kaylee, and Lucas Hein.
There will be a Memorial Service at First Lutheran Church at 4000 Concord Blvd., Concord, CA. at 11:30 am on Saturday Apr. 27, 2013
