AVILLA — Loren R "Skinny" Dunn, 95, of Avilla and formerly of Waterloo passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015 ,at Presence Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.
He was born May 23, 1920, in Waterloo to Clarence A. and Mary Francis (Wetoskey) Dunn.
Skinny was a WWII U.S. Air Force veteran serving from October 1940 to May 1945. He was staff sergeant, flight engineer serving overseas for 37 months. He was awarded the Bronze Star in American Defense Service Medal, Air Medal with two Silver Oak Leaf Clusters, two Bronze Stars with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Auburn and a member of the former Waterloo VFW.
He served as a volunteer fireman for the Waterloo Fire Department for over 25 years. He was a former member of the DeKalb Central School Board and served 8 years as the DeKalb County Auditor.
He worked at King–Seely in Kendallville, retiring in 1986.
He married Beverly Girardot on September 27, 1944, in Auburn and she passed away on January 20, 2003.
Surviving are four daughters and a son, Diana Jo Dannaldson of Waterloo, Janet (Max) Schiffli of Auburn, Ken (Mary) Dunn of Buford, Georgia, Judy (Rick) Baker of Auburn and Julia (Bruce) Meyer of Bowling Green, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; four brothers, Paul, Raymond, Vic and Albert Dunn; and five sisters, Alma Brown, Helene Schaab, Emma Dunn, Hilda Daeger and Margaret McKeown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be noon today, Friday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Auburn with Father Derrick Sneyd officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Catholic Cemetery.
Calling is 1 hour prior to the service from 1 a.m. to noon at the church.
