Visitation is 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a rosary and prayer service at 7 p.m.
Tillie passed away, Thursday, May 12 at Marion Manor in Glen Ullin.
Matilda ?Tillie? (Hoerner) Fitterer was born Oct. 28, 1917 to Henry and Margaretha (Hegel) Hoerner on the family farm near Almont. Tillie grew up on the family farm and attended country school.
After school, she worked for the NYA for several years. It was during this time that she met Edward Fitterer at a wedding dance. Ed courted her by horseback and they were married on Nov. 15, 1938, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church, south of Glen Ullin.
The couple farmed throughout the Glen Ullin area until they retired in 1974. They moved to town in 1999 and Tillie has made her home in Glen Ullin ever since, the last eight years of which were at Marion Manor.
Tillie was the founder of the Sacred Heart Welcoming Committee, as well as a lifetime member and past president of Sacred Heart Christian Mothers. She also served as Eucharistic minister and rosary leader. Tillie and her husband, Ed, loved to dance to old-time music and especially loved square dancing.
She was a very competitive pinochle card player, and never played a game ?just for fun.? Tillie?s passion for quilting resulted in more than 100 quilts over the years. Friends and family often enjoyed eating her homemade baked goods as much as she enjoyed making them. She was often seen tending to her flower and vegetable gardens.
She is survived by three sons: Ernest (Mary Ann) Fitterer, Glen Ullin, Robert (Sally) Fitterer, Aurora, Colo., Jerome (Bernadette) Fitterer, Bismarck; five daughters: Loretta (Quentin) Stockert, Bismarck, Marlene Fitterer, Bismarck, Mary Jane (John) Herz, Grand Forks, Beverly (Jerry) Duppong, Bismarck, Bonita (Douglas) Quast, Mandan; twenty-eight grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; one sister: Elizabeth Steckler, Bismarck.
Tillie was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; one sister, Katherine Gustin, and three brothers: Peter Hoerner, Martin Hoerner, and John Hoerner.
