Bernard Joseph "Bernie" Scher, 88, of Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at 8:05 p.m. at The Heritage of Huntington.
Mr. Scher was a graduate of Huntington Catholic High School. He was manager of Altman-Kramer Motors, Huntington, and retired from Poinsatte Motors, Fort Wayne. He served with the United States Army in World War II and the Korean War and received a Bronze Star medal.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689 and Roanoke American Legion Post 160 and was a Fourth Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus Council 1014, Huntington. He was a recipient of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonel award.
He was born on March 19, 1924, in Huntington to Fred J. and Gertrude Young Scher. He married Patricia Ann Poehler on June 19, 1948, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Gary Wayne (Anne Marie) Scher, of Carmel; a daughter, Deborah Ann (Keith) Johnson, of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Mary Margaret Casper and Anna Mae Lippincott, both of Huntington; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Calling is Monday, April 9, 2012, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., with recitation of the rosary at 7:45 p.m., at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington.
Preferred memorials are gifts to the Knights of Columbus or the Spina Bifida Association in care of McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.
