Rev. Albert M. Guthmiller, known as "Pastor Al" to many, reached his Heavenly reward on Sunday, March 30, 2008, after a 78 year life of service to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Al was born on May 2, 1929 in Herrick, South Dakota. His own father died unexpectedly while Albert was still in his mother's womb, so he was raised alone by his mother, Pauline, in the hard reality of rural Tripp, SD. Her inspiration of determination, hard work, thrift, and love for the Lord left a lasting impression on him. His strong work ethic and ability to save money enabled him to attend Lakeland College and the Mission House Seminary, where he received his Master's of Divinity and entered a life of service to God's people.
While he was in high school, he met the love of his life, Mary Schmidt, who married him in 1952 after a seven year courtship. They embarked on their journey together, and during their 55-year marriage, they found the joy that came with having three children: Kim, Mike, and Tami. They enjoyed many good times as a family, whether it was popping popcorn and watching TV together at home, or camping on vacation, or enjoying their family's special recipes around the dinner table.
Al and Mary served churches and had active, growing ministries in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota before settling here in Lodi, where they served at Zion Reformed Church for 16 years.
The emphasis of Al's ministry was in the care for his congregation, and he focused much effort on celebrating life and sharing sorrows with those whom the Lord had entrusted to his care. Although he retired from active ministry in 1992, he continued to mentor others in the ministry, and was an active member of Calvary Bible Church. Despite his illness, he was able to worship at Easter services last week, which brought him much comfort and joy.
Albert is survived by his wife, Mary of Lodi; their son, Mike Guthmiller of Galt; and their daughters, Kim Anamizu of Woodbridge and Tamara Petrick of Lodi. "Papa" (as he was known by those who loved him) was blessed with six grandchildren: Benjamin Petrick, Zachary and Katey Anamizu, and Allyson, Amy, and Amanda Guthmiller, all of whom were able to be at his bedside in his final hours. Al's example was a constant guide to his entire family, and it was a privilege for each one to be able to say goodbye and thank him as he passed over to the other side.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Albert and Pauline Guthmiller, and his stepfather Christian Dewald.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Bible Church, 18621 N. Highway 99 West Frontage Road, Acampo on Friday April 4. A visitation is scheduled at Cherokee Funeral Home.
