Bismarck, N.D. - Funeral service for Walter Nies, 88, of Bismarck and formerly of Ashley, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church at Ashley. Visitation is Wednesday from noon-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
He died Dec. 9, 2005, at MedCenter One in Bismarck.
Walter Nies, son of John and Johanna (Geiszler) Nies, was born Feb. 19, 1917, on the family homestead nine miles north of Ashley, N.D. This where he grew up while attending country school in Danzig, N.D. He worked on the family farm.
He was united in marriage to Clara Stoecker on March 24, 1940, at Lehr, N.D. They made their home on his family farm. They were general farmers raising small grains and livestock. In the fall of 1947, they moved to California, where he worked for the City of Lodi. In the fall of 1948, they returned to the family homestead and resumed farming. When he turned 62 years of age, he retired. In November of 1993, they moved into Ashley and, in May of 2003, they moved to Bismarck, and lived at Bismarck Primrose.
Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing and driving his antique car.
He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church at Ashley, where he had held various positions over the years, the Historic Car Club, Farmers Union and the Wishek Car Club.
Survivors include his wife of Bismarck; three daughters, Stella (James E.) Merkel of Aberdeen, Connie (Duane) Barden of Mandan and Roszella (Paul) Hanson of Grand Forks; four sons, Roger (Gloria) Nies of San Diego, Calif., Rayton (Paula) Nies of Sanford, Mich., Timothy (Jill) Nies of Grand Forks and Curtis (Wanda Schlabsz) Nies of Ashley; one brother, Edwin Nies of Horace, N.D.; one sister, Anna Meyers of Fargo; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
His parents, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Honorary casketbearers will be Walter's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers will be Scott Merkel, Troy Hanson, Daniel Nies, Dwight Merkel, Brian Barden and Rueben Nies Jr.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with the arrangements.
