McGOWAN ? Robert M. Sr., 72, Richland Township, died Aug. 13, 2009, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born Dec. 19, 1936, in Clearfield Township, son of Joseph B. and Ellen Georgia (Gettings) McGowan. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Joseph, Tom, Paul and John; sister, Georgia Mae Illig; and in-laws, Alma McGowan, Glenn Illig, Tony Turchetta and Joan Feyock. Survived by loving wife of 49 years, Lenore ?Norie? (Feyock); children, Denise, wife of Dr. Kip Benko, Pittsburgh; Robert M. Jr., married to Jackie (Martella), Richland Township; Marianne, wife of Michael Nugent, Fanwood, N.J.; Paul ?PJ,? Richland Township; grandchildren, Savannah Benko, Nicholas and Joseph McGowan, Nicole and Bobby Nugent and Ryan McGowan; and in-laws, Margaret McGowan, Stevens, Pa.; Pauline Turchetta, Cresson; Francis Feyock, Richland Township; and John and Carol Feyock, East Petersburg, Pa. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Robert McGowan Sr. was the last living member of his immediate family. Bob was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Geistown for 38 years, where he was a member of the Usher?s Club and a past member of the Holy Name Society. He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Anne?s Council 4295, Cresson. Bob attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School in Cresson. He is a 1954 graduate of Cresson Joint High School and a 1958 graduate of St. Francis College, Loretto. He served in the Pennsylvania National Guard from 1959-1962. Bob retired from Conemaugh Valley Mutual Insurance Co. as the CEO in 2001 after 19 years. Prior to CVMI, Bob worked for Equifax for 22 years. Bob was a member of the Cresson/Cresson Joint High School Alumni Association; Cresson Volunteer Fire Company; Volunteer Firemen?s Association of Cambria County; Central District Volunteer Firemen?s Association of Pennsylvania; Western Pennsylvania Firemen?s Association; past president and life member of Richland Volunteer Fire Company; former member of Geistown/Richland Lion?s Club; former member of Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and served as director during that time; South Fork Rod & Gun Club; and charter member of East Hills Charity Committee, which was initially founded to financially support the building of the current Richland Fire Company, Scalp Avenue Station. Bob was active in volunteering his time to Arbutus Little League Baseball League; V.E. Erickson Baseball League; Boy Scout Leader Troop 236; Voice of the Richland Rams Football (1979-1989); and Richland High School Band and Football Boosters (1975-1989). Friends will be received from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Rev. David S. Peles, pastor. Committal will be held at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Cresson. Bob was the recipient of a double lung transplant in June 2006. He carried the ?Torch of Life? in 2008 National Transplant Games.
