Alice F. Van Horn, age 85, of Mount Gilead, went to be with the Lord, Monday morning, April 8, 2013, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital surrounded by her loving family after suffering a heart attack a few days prior.
On May 2, 1927, Alice was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, one of three children of the late Fred and Anna (Brown) Spearman. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School, and also studied cosmetology for a year after high school.
One fateful evening at a local square dance in Mount Vernon, Alice met a young man, George William ?Bill? Van Horn from Chesterville, who would dance with her for the rest of her life. Soon after meeting, they were married on August 26, 1948, at her parent?s home. They have cherished their 64 years of marriage, and lovingly raised two children, Rick and LeeAnn, together.
A woman of deep faith, Alice was an active member of the Pulaskiville Community Bible Church since the early 1950?s, where she had been a part of the Ladies? Aid Group and taught Sunday School. She also was an avid reader of her Bible, devotionals, and any other Christian books she could get her hands on, all of which she enjoyed discussing with her family and friends.
Appreciating the olden days, every year for the past 30 years, Alice and Bill have gotten together with as many as 40 couples from the Morrow County area to do a wagon train. Every day for a week, they would meet with their horses and wagons to ride in a line to a destination, where they would gather to share food, stories and their friendship. They also used their draft horses and wagons at the Morrow County Fair and many of the local parades and festivals.
Having a green thumb, Alice enjoyed tending to her flower garden every year, and she especially loved when her flowers would bloom. She also was proud to show her flowers in the Morrow County Fair, and was a member of the Wayside Garden Club. She and Bill also grew an extensive vegetable garden every year, to enjoy all throughout the year after they did their canning.
A ?wonderful cook and baker?, Alice was well known for her pies that she would bring to church dinners, family meals, and on the wagon train.
Having a ?beautiful and engaging smile?, Alice was a wonderful woman who loved to laugh and was genuine in her love and caring for others. A word that would best describe her would be ?devoted?, as she was a deeply devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and servant to her Lord and Savior.
She will be dearly missed by her beloved husband, Bill Van Horn of Mount Gilead; her son, Pastor Rick (Kathryn) Van Horn, of Churubuso, Indiana; a son-in-law, Jamie (Wendy) Taylor of Danville; six grandchildren: David (Kim) Van Horn, Nathan (Amanda) Van Horn, Kaly and Anna Van Horn, Jamie (Misty) Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Including her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her daughter, LeeAnn Taylor in 2003; an infant son, David William Van Horn; and two brothers: Art and Charles Spearman.
The Van Horn family will greet friends from 4 ? 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring her life and giving glory to God will also be held there on Friday at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Ned Reece officiating, and will again greet friends for the hour prior her services. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Morrow Manor Nursing Home and Pulaskiville Community Bible Church, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
