She attended school in Johnsburg and then went on to do housework for various families before working a short time at Hormel. She was married to Joseph Nicholas Matheis on June 6, 1944 at St. John's Catholic Church in Johnsburg, Minnesota and together they farmed in the Johnsburg area until they retired in 1976 and moved to their new home in Adams. Velma remained in her home following her husband's death in 2006 until she moved to the Adams Health Care Center Assisted Living apartments in September of 2013. Velma was a cook at St. John's elementary school for several years and was also a clerk at Freund's Store in Johnsburg for a number of years, but her greatest joy was being a farm wife and mother to her five children. She did beautiful embroidery work her entire life and loved making quilts for all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe, son Richard, grandson Ryan Gordon, brothers and sisters-in-law Wilmer and Evangeline Landherr, Eugene and Nancy Landherr, sisters and brother-in-law Rosella and Bob Jorgenson, Elizabeth (Betty) Landherr and Louise Landherr.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11AM Wednesday December 17, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams with Father Swaminatha Pothireddy officiating. Interment will be in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Johnsburg. Visitation will be at the Adams Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 16, from 4 to 7PM with a rosary service at 4PM. There will also be visitation at the Adams Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30AM.Published in the Austin Daily News December 15, 2014..
