Hildebrand Veteran, avid boatsman and craftsman Shepard Arthur Hildebrand, of Marblehead, died quietly May 28, 2006, at his home.Born March 6, 1915, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., son of Ethel and Arthur Hildebrand, he attended Bucknell and Ohio State universities prior to World War II and then Harvard Business School.During the war, Mr. Hildebrand served with the U.S. Coast Guard where he earned the rank of chief petty officer. Also during the war, he met his first wife, Marguerite Dunlap Klem. After the war the couple moved to Marblehead, where Mr. Hildebrand had a successful career with Massachusetts Blue Cross-Blue Shield until he retired in 1980. Afterward, he lived with his second wife, Priscilla Barr, in both Naples, Fla., and Marblehead.A man of keen intellect, with an innate curiosity and fastidious quest for knowledge, Mr. Hildebrand was an avid boatsman, a longtime member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, and a meticulous master craftsman who built and rebuilt several wooden boats.He leaves his first wife, Marguerite (Skip) Klem; his second wife, Priscilla Barr; a brother, Robert; two sons, Robert of Salt Lake City, Utah and Stephen of Bradenton, Fla.; two stepchildren, Cynthia Barr-Pfeffer and William (Tobey) Barr Jr.; and three grandchildren, Maija, Jenny and Jeffrey.A memorial service was held June 2 from the Arland-Dirlam Memorial Chapel in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Arrangements were under the direction of the Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home of Marblehead.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St, Danvers, MA 01923.
