Roy Moab Showalter 81, of 138 Village Square, Chambersburg, and formerly of Maugansville, Md., died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 in Menno Haven Retirement Community, Chambersburg. Born Nov. 29, 1924, in Reid, Md., he was a son of the late Alvah M. and Katie Shank Showalter. Mr. Showalter graduated from Eastern Mennonite School, Harrisonburg, Va. in 1942. He had been married to Leona Crider Showalter, who died Sept. 19, 2004. They were married for 57 years. Roy Showalter worked for 40 years as a bookkeeping manager at Maugansville Elevator & Lumber, Martin's Elevator, and Paramount Feed & Supply. His opus ultimum is (Mennonites in the Cumberland Valley:)"Elders in each Church", 789 pp., 2004. He was a long-term member of Salem Ridge Mennonite Church, Greencastle, and Bethel Mennonite Church, Warfordsburg. He served as Sunday School teacher, superintendent and trustee. More recently, he was a member of New Hope Mennonite Church, Upper Strasburg. He was a curator of Mennonite Historical Association of the Cumberland Valley, treasurer of Eastern Mennonite Associated Libraries and Archives, and a member of Maugansville Historical Society. He served on the boards of Shalom Christian Academy, Chambersburg, Pa., Menno Haven Retirement Communities, and Brook Lane Health Services. Together he and his wife, Leona, volunteered with Mennonite Disaster Service for over 15 years. He is survived by three sons, Don Showalter of Branford, Conn., Lowell Showalter of Clarkston, Mich. and Linden Showalter of Waynesboro,Pa.; four daughters, Ruby Denlinger and Carolyn Showalter, both of Maugansville, Md., Helen Hertzler of Mount Joy and Bev Beiler of Gap; one sister, Martha Martin of Chambersburg; 18 grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son; and three sisters, Esther Keener, Cora Oberholzer and Dorothy Keener. Services were held the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Salem Ridge Mennonite Church, Greencastle with Minister Roger Martin and Chaplain Ray Geigley officiating. Burial followed in Salem Ridge Mennonite Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Mennonite Historical Association of the Cumberland Valley, 4850 Molly Pitcher Hwy., or to the Cumberland Valley Relief Center, 4225 Molly Pitcher Highway, both of Chambersburg, PA, 17201.
