Obituary for Roger Donald Zimmerman
The funeral service for Roger Donald Zimmerman, 88, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday April 5, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Erin Heidelberger officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at Venturia Reformed Church Cemetery, Venturia, ND. Roger died Friday, April 1, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation will be 3:00-7:00 p.m., Monday at Spitzer-Miller Fellowship Hall, 1111 South Main Street.
Roger Zimmerman was born on January 15, 1928 near Eureka, SD to Henry and Bertha (Berreth) Zimmerman. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He lived on the family farm and helped his parents with the farm work.
Roger married Lorraine Dockter on October 13, 1949 in Eureka. They made their home on the family farm. In May of 1953, he entered the United States Army, serving in Korea with the 3rd Infantry and later with the 25th Division in Hawaii. Roger was honorably discharged in 1955 and returned to the family farm. On January 18, 1979, Lorraine passed away in Minneapolis, MN. In 1980 Roger left the farm and moved to Aberdeen.
On June 17, 1980, Roger was united in marriage to Wilma Gienger Hoffman in Aberdeen. He then worked for Northern State University until he retired in 1994 as Supervisor of Grounds. For the next four years, he worked part time for Econo Foods.
Roger was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. He was a life member of South Dakota State Employees Association, and was also a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Senior Center. In his spare time, he enjoyed volunteer work and woodworking projects.
Grateful for having shared Roger’s life are his wife, Wilma, Aberdeen; his step-children: Jerome Hoffman (Romi Cole), St. Cloud, MN and Rose (Rod) Wiedrich, Mina, SD; his sister, Julie Jones, Spokane, WA; his grandchildren: Ryan (Kari) Hoffman, Kevin (Ruth) Hoffman, Weston (Brooke) Wiedrich; great-grandchildren: Dakota Hoffman, Caleb and Claire Hoffman, Lily, Jaden, Elliot, Kinley, and Garrett Wiedrich; and his nephews and nieces.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lorraine; infant son, Lars; sister, LouElla Serr; nephew, Kenneth Serr; step-daughter-in-law, Dianna Hoffman and brother-in-law Albert Serr.
