Bio: RALPH HICKMAN DIES SUDDENLY OF HEART ATTACK Final rites will he held today at 2 p.m. at the McKee funeral home for Ralph M. Hickman, 55, 218, 1/2 South Randolph street, well known B. & 0. employee. Mr. Charles Secrest of the First Church of Christ will officiate and burial will follow in Calvary cemetery. The F. 0. Eagles lodge, of which he was a member, held twilight services at the funeral home Sunday at 8 p.m. Mr. Hickman died Friday shortly before 5 a.m. of a sudden heart attack while working at the B. & 0. station in Garrett. Mr. Hickman s death was a shock to his many friends as he had not been ill. Harry Cramer of 410 South Britton street, B. & 0. trainmaster, witnessed the entire incident. Mr. Hickman, a B. & 0. clerk, was working as relief ticket agent. The B. & 0. Washington-Chicago express had pulled into the Garrett station Friday at 4:51 a.m. Hickman was loading baggage and mail from a baggage truck onto the train. Mr. Cramer happened to be watching Hickman from the second floor window of the station. He saw Hickman push the truck from the baggage car to the postal car. Just when Hickman stopped he turned around and then slumped to the ground. Mr. Cramer immediately sensed something was radically wrong and ran downstairs. He called to J. M. Moomaw of 306, 1/2 South Cowen street, B. & 0. yardmaster, who was standing nearby, and they rushed to Hickman's side. Hickman was breathing but could not talk. Cramer instructed Moomaw to call a doctor, ambulance and the fire department resuscitator. Cramer then obtained a stretcher off the train and eased Hickman onto it. By the time the doctor and resuscitator squad arrived Cramer could detect no pulse or breathing from Hickman. The doctor stated Mr. Hickman was dead a-though the resuscitator squad worked on him from 5 to 5:30 a.m. A coronary occlusion caused the man's death. Mr. Hickman was born Sept. 1, 1905, in Garrett, a son of Arthur K. and Nell Hickman. He hired out as a B. & 0. clerk Sept. 21, 1925, and over the years had worked in various locations on the entire B. & 0. Chicago subdivision. On May 31, 1928, he and Audrey Shoudel of Auburn were married in Garrett. Surviving besides the widow are a son, Jacques Hickman of Chicago; two grandchildren; a brother, Grandville Hickman of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Robert Reffner, who, with her husband, resides with the mother, Mrs. Nell Hickman of 219 South Harrison street. Mr. Hickman was very prominent in the F. 0. Eagles lodge at Garrett. He is a past worthy president of the organization and was serving his third term as a trustee when he died. He was also a member of the First Church of Christ. Garrett ClipperMay 8, 1961
