His parents farmed near Menno and he attended school in Menno. In the early 1950's, Melvin joined his father, Richard, in Herrboldt Trucking. Melvin married Esther Wollman on July 17, 1949. To this union four children were born; Marcelline, DuWayne, Rosemarie, and Patricia. Melvin farmed near Lesterville and operated Herrboldt Trucking with his son DuWayne. He moved to Yankton in the early 1980's and married Gertrude Herrboldt. Melvin trucked for 50 years and worked with his son, DuWayne, on the farm. He married Betty Cressy on May 24, 1997, in Yankton, South Dakota. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Melvin loved farming and driving his big rig. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Yankton; four children, Marcelline (Roland) Marquardt of Las Vegas, Nevada, DuWayne (Lugene Theel) Herrboldt of Lesterville, South Dakota, Rosemarie Schamber of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Patricia (Arlo) Rohlfs of Akron, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; sister, Corine Ekern of Kansas City, Missouri; two nephews; three nieces; and Betty's children, Russell (Durinda) Biesman of Westminster, Colorado, Vicki (Bob) Rye of Grand Island, Nebraska, Richard (Colette) Biesman of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Randall (Helen) Biesman of St. Charles, Missouri.
