Leland Upham Leland "Lee" O. Upham, 75, died Jan. 21, 2008, at Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Lee Herberg officiating. Burial will follow services in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military honors will be provided by Flasher American Legion. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with remembrance services at 7 p.m. Visitation continues at the church one hour before the service Thursday. Leland O. Upham was born Sept. 10, 1932, in Shields, to Floyd and Mary (Dahl) Upham. He was raised and educated in the Shields area. As a teenager Lee taught himself to bull ride, which became a passion of his. When he was 17 he enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War in the Army 3rd Division. He was injured in the war and when he returned home he received two Purple Hearts for his service. He was a man of independence and courage and yet still a gentleman. He loved the outdoors, and nature, hunting and fishing were a source of enjoyment. In all of this he had a strong sense of patriotism for his country and a strong religious conviction. Following the service to his country Lee returned to North Dakota and lived in Bowman, where he worked on a ranch. This allowed him to continue his love of the sport of bull riding. On July 29, 1952, Lee married the love of his life, Betty Boehm, in Fort Lawton, Wash. They lived in Flasher, where Lee became an owner operator of a barbershop. In 1964 they moved to Mandan, where he continued working as a barber, and later at the State Industrial School. Betty died Feb. 5, 2006. Lee will be missed by his two daughters and two sons-in-law, Georgine (Ken) Hermanson, Hazen, and Sharon (Dean) Messmer, Lake Havasu, Ariz.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill (Terry), Minot, and Doug and Mike (Denise), both of Mandan; 10 grandchildren, Jody Hermanson, Sara, Becca and Laura Messmer, Carlie and Cameron Upham, and Justin, Josh, Jesse and Laura Leigh Upham; four great-grandchildren, Hunter, Sydney, Gauge and Gavin; and two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Glenn (Shirley), Mandan, and Stanley (Janice), Thief River Falls, Minn.
