LaVerne John Guthmiller, resident of Manor, Texas, passed away there February 23, 2005. He was born on April 25, 1931, in Menno, South Dakota to Albert and Mabel Guthmiller. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie. Surviving family members are brothers, Mervin Guthmiller, Emmett Guthmiller, sisters, Irene Imig, Loraine Baltzer, Marjorie Sorenson, daughters, Karen Guthmiller, Deborah Klepac, and husband Terry, grandson, Andrew Klepac, sons Michael Guthmiller and David Guthmiller and wife Debbie, grandsons, Jason and Jon Guthmiller. LaVerne "Vern", was a Staff Sergeant and decorated veteran of the Korean War from January 1951- January 1955. He was the Grand Master of Lodge 27 of the Masonic Fraternity in Pierre, South Dakota and an active member of the Shriner, Elks, and VFW. Mr. Guthmiller was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church since 1974 and had served as president of the congregation. Mr. Guthmiller was highly regarded as an investigator for the United States Department of Agriculture where he worked from January 1955 to 1994. Upon retiring from the government, Vern began work at Manor Downs as paddock judge and security staff. He also enjoyed working his cattle ranch. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Faith Lutheran Church, 6600 Woodrow Avenue. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorials in LaVerne Guthmiller's name may be sent to the Faith Lutheran Social Services, 6600 Woodrow Ave., Austin, Texas or to the Shriner's Organization.
