- [S927] Obituary.
Hertha Deutscher was born March 25, 1917, in Streeter, N.D. Mom suffered a stroke and passed peacefully away Aug. 6, 2010. She was raised by her grandparents until she married Gerhardt Deutscher in Streeter, N.D. Mom was of good German stock with very strong work ethics, a good and loving mother and an excellent cook of German food. Hertha is survived by daughter Jan and sons Gary (Lloyd Ann), Allen (Marijke) Terry and Rick; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and other family members, Beckie Cariveau, who she thought of as a daughter, Sonok Deutscher, Cindy Deutscher, Kathy Deutscher and Nancy Deutscher; half brother Philip Martell; half sisters Tillie Jorgenson and Christina Lancaster.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Arlene Hankel; son Gerald; husband Gerhardt and grandson Justin Deutscher. How do you condense nearly a century of living into just a few words? Mom?s early life consisted of moving and having babies. From farming in North Dakota to canning in California, orchards in Washington to owning a bakery in Idaho. It wasn?t until moving to Billings in the early 1950?s that Mom was able to devote her time to the two constants in her life - hard work and raising her seven children. Although probably not considered successful as far as career or material riches, Mom had a wealth of love and absolutely knew how to raise her family. We - her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and dear friends are Mom?s treasure, her fine art, rare coins, sparkling jewels and her life?s legacy. Mom loved music, dancing and playing the Harmonica and even to the last hours of her life, she was clapping a beat to music only she could hear. In the game of life, you hit the ball true, ran the bases hard and slid into home plate to a cheering crowd, breathless, dirty, tattered - and smiling! Well played, Mom, well played. So now Mom?s work gloves are off, her apron untied and folded- it?s time for a well deserved rest in God?s loving embrace. Until we meet again - We love you.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Smith Downtown Chapel, located at 925 South 27 Street. Interment will follow at Mountview Cemetery. A reception will be held at the American Legion Hall, located at 1540 Broadwater Avenue following services. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, also at Smith Downtown Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Rocky Mountain Hospice or your choice.
Also, a special Thanks to the staff at Tender Nest, where Mom resided for the last 2 1/2 months and the doctors and nurses at St Vincent Hospital.
