Born May 25, 1907, in Penn Hills, she was a lifelong resident of the area. An elementary education teacher, she taught third grade and retired in 1970 after 32 years with the Penn Hills School District. Mrs. Cleland was a founding member of Rosedale Methodist Church, and was a former member and past matron of the Verona Eastern Star. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn (The Rev. William) Carroll of West Deer, and three sisters, Ruth Woodruff of Florida, Grace Heltzell of Butler and Wilma Heath of Lancaster. Also surviving are two grandchildren, William Carroll and Ann O'Brien, and two great-grand-children, Madison O'Brien and Fiona Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Bash Cleland; her parents, William and Anna Miller Hochberg; a brother, Homer Hochberg; and a sister, Clara Jordan. Friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME INC., family owned and operated, 421 Allegheny Ave., Oakmont. Additional visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. Tuesday until a service at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Methodist Church, with her son-in-law, the Rev. William Carroll, officiating.
