Hieb, homesteaded sixteen claims of land 17 miles east of Eureka in 1884, three years before Eureka came into existence. John J. Hieb, born March 26, 1886, was the oldest son of 16 children born to George and Katharina (Perman) Hieb. John married Eva Bauer on March 30, 1908. They were the parents of 13 children. John helped form a business partnership known as Hieb, Opp and Wixel, operating a grain elevator and the John Deere Implement Shop. Later he sold his interest in the business to Henry Opp and went to work for the city of Eureka as manager of the Eureka Liquor Store. Eva Hieb died on February 23, 1951, in Eureka. In 1956, John retired and moved to Lodi, California. He died May 14, 1965. Harley F. Hieb, son of John and Eva Hieb joined the Army on May 2, 1933, at Fort Lincoln, North Dakota. He spent two years duty in the Philippine Islands, 1935-1937. He returned to Fort Lincoln from 1937 to 1939 then was transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington. He was sent back to the Philippines in 1940 and returned to the states October 13, 1945. He was listed as "missing in action" in December 1941. After the surrender of Bataan, he escaped from the "Death March", and fought with the guerrilla forces in the Philippines. He helped organize the USAF-NL First Division prior to the landing of American forces on the island of Luzon. He returned to the states after the war and was married to Elaine Marr on November 13, 1945, in Eureka. After several years of recruiting duty in Minnesota and Montana, he was ordered to Korea in 1952 and assigned to the 5th RCT. He spent one year on front line duty commanding the Second Battalion. Upon his return to the states was assigned to the Personnel Center, Camp Stoneman and Oakland, California. He retired January 31, 1957, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, from the U. S. Army. Harley went into business after retiring from the service and owned and operated several businesses--the last was Hieb Enterprises, manufacturing tow ropes and related products. He sold the business in 1980, which now goes under the name of USA Products, a division of Hieb Enterprises. Harley has just finished writing a book, "Heart of Iron" on his experiences as a guerrilla fighter in the Philippines. Harley and Elaine are the parents of two daughters. Cynthia McFarland Johnson is a bilingual teacher in San Diego, California. She has a masters degree from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. Her husband is working toward his doctorate in music. Candace Wilson has her masters in Speech Therapy. Her husband has a masters degree in business and has his own export-import business. They have two children, Elsbeth and Christian Wilson.

Hieb, Ret., 80, of Lodi, Calif., was Tuesday, April 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lodi with the Rev. Robert Mattheis officiating. Committal was in Lodi Memorial Cemetery with participation of the Lodi VFW Post 1968. He died March 29, 1994, in Mesa, Ariz. Harley F. Hieb was born in Eureka. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 18. At the outbreak of World War II, he was stationed in the Philippine Islands and was captured by the enemy and wasincluded in the forced march known as the Bataan death march. He escaped from his captors during the march and lived in the jungles in caves with a band of Pilipono men who foraged food from thr jungles. After the war, he returned to the states. On Nov. 13, 1945, he married Elaine Marr in Eureka. He later went on to serve in the Korean Conflict and retired from active duty at the Oakland Army Depot in 1957. He was associated with several family businesses including a concrete and block plant in Williston, N.D.; Washorama in Lodi; Star Auto Polishing and Detail Shop in Sacramento; and Hieb Enterprises, which manufactured towing equipment in Lodi. He was the author of "Heart of Iron," a book about his experiences in the Philippines during the war. Col. Hieb was a member of the American Legion Post 186 in Eureka, the Lower Yellowstone Lodge No. 90 F & A.M. in Sidney, Mont. SIRS No. 145 in Lodi and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Verna LeSuer and a brother, John Hieb. Survivors include his wife, Elaine Hieb of Lodi; two daughters, Cynthia McFarland-Johnson of Napa and Candice Wilson of Turlock; six sisters, Ella Mutschler of Lodi, Ann Jorgensen of San Jose, Colleen McCain of Escondido, Frances Cirks of Arziona and Agnes Prout and Florence Lee Hopkins, both of Minnesota; two brothers, Harry Hieb of Selma and Max Hieb of Phoenix; and six grandchildren.
