Tuesday, April 21, 2009 12:05 PM CDT Ervin Arthur Schempp died 04/12/09 Ervin Arthur Schempp, 87, Menno, S.D., died Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. The funeral was held Wednesday April 15, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with the Rev. Brad Danielson officiating. Advertisement Ervin was born on Aug. 2, 1921 in Hutchinson County to Christ and Lydia (Koerner) Schempp. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Menno which later became Grace Lutheran Church, where he remained a member his entire life. He attended country school at the Zeeb School. After graduating the eighth grade, Ervin continued helping his father farm. While farming in the Menno area, he opened Schempp Clothing with twin brother, Erhardt. During this time he started a farming partnership with his older brother Elton. They worked and farmed together for many years. On April 22, 1951 he married Darlene Guericke in Menno where they lived, farmed, and raised their family for over 58 years. Highlights of his commitment to the Menno community included serving on the church council during the planning and building of Grace Lutheran Church and serving on the city council during the building of the Menno Pool. He also served many years as a board member for the Menno Farmers Grain and Stock Company. Ervin is survived by his wife Darlene of Menno; two daughters: Monica Huber and husband Gary, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Jody Kludt and husband William, Lesterville, S.D.; one son, Jon and wife Tarra (Pudwill), Gillette, Wyo.; a sister, Lucille Wollman and husband Harold, Longmont, Colo.; a brother, Leo Schempp and wife Adeline, Turkey Ridge, S.D. Ervin was also blessed with 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Ervin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Elton and Erhardt; and sister, Luella Kuen.
