Cline and Son have charge of arrangements. Was Civic LeaderAside from his long service as a physician, Dr. McCurdy has had a varied and important role in the development of the community over a period of more than two score years. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the Frederick City Police Commission and a member of the City Board of Health. He retained an active interest in civic affairs through his last illness.A native of York, Pa., Dr. McCurdy was a son of the late James Crawford McCurdy and his surviving mother. The McCurdy family is one of the oldest in Western Pennsylvania and is of Scotch descent. His father was a captain in the Eleventh Volunteer Pennsylvania Infantry of the Union during the Civil War and saw service in the various campaigns in Virginia, participating in several battles. He was also a high school principal.Dr. McCurdy spent his childhood with his mother at Woodsboro and later attended the old New Windsor College, from which he was graduated in 1889. He was graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York in 1892 and took a special course in the New York Eye and Ear Hospital.Returned In 1892He returned to Frederick County in the fall of 1892 and began the practice of medicine here. In recent years his health was not robust, out his practice was not long interrupted until he was injured recently. Many of the sanitation and health laws enacted for Frederick in the last half century were backed by Dr. McCurdy, who as City Health Officer for fifteen years, also stressed the enforcement of these laws. He was long a strong advocate of a sanitary sewerage system here and was active in having hog pens eliminated in the city.Commissioned in 1910 as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the Maryland National Guard by the late Governor Crothers, Dr. McCurdy served several years with the militia. He was an examiner for the Frederick County Draft Board during the last World War.He strongly advocated the removal of Frederick Police from political interference and with the aid of other leading citizens forced the issue in the 1940 municipal election. As a result, the present administration named a commission headed by Dr. McCurdy to outline a civil service plan for the Police Department. The plan adopted resulted in enactment by the General Assembly of the present police act. Dr. McCurdy was only recently reappointed to the Police Commission for a five-year term. He took much interest in this work and served without salary as he did as a member of the City Board of Health.First CommissionerFollowing repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and enactment of the present local option law for Frederick County, Dr. McCurdy was named the first alcoholic beverage license commissioner for Frederick County. He served until a Republican successor was named in 1935.A first baseman of ability in his medical school days and a friend of many of the oldtimers in organized baseball, Dr. McCurdy was a steadfast baseball fan throughout his life. He helped foster the old Sunset League and helped organize the Frederick team of that circuit. He was a leading sponsor of the old Tri-City and Blue Ridge Leagues, and served as president and director of the Frederick teams for many years. He played a leading role in the sale of some of the talented players sent by Frederick to teams in higher classification.A personal friend of Billy Evans, then general manager of the Cleveland Baseball Club of the American League, Dr. McCurdy was largely instrumental in selling the local franchise in the Blue Ridge League to the Indians in 1928. Dr. McCurdy was a regular attendant at World Series games for many years.Park Given His NameHe directed the organization of the Frederick County Athletic Association that purchased the land and built the stands and fences to provide the Frederick Blue Ridge with a first class playing field in 1923. This new athletic plant was named McCurdy Field in honor of Dr. McCurdy. Several years ago, Dr. McCurdy interested Frederick city officials in the purchase of the field for a nominal sum. Holder of a mortgage on the field, he managed the field and financed its maintenance after the demise of organized baseball.Dr. McCurdy was a member and officer of the Frederick County Medical Society for many years; a member of the American Medical Association and of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland.A Past Commander of Jacques DeMolay Commandery, No. 4, Knights of Templar, Dr. McCurdy was a member of other Masonic bodies. He was a member of Columbia Lodge, No. 58, A.F. and Masons, and Enoch Royal Arch Chapter, No. 23. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.Never an aspirant for public office, Dr. McCurdy was active in the councils of the Democratic party. For a number of years he served as permanent chairman of conventions held by Frederick City democrats.____________________________________________Frederick, MD ?The News? issue of Wednesday, 5 August 1942, p. 5, col. 1FuneralsThe funeral of Dr. Ira Jay McCurdy took place Tuesday morning at 11 o?clock.
