  [S927] Obituary. March 4, 1921 - January 25, 2018 Funeral services for Della K. Guthmiller, 96, Aberdeen will be 10:00am, Monday, January 29, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Pastor Liz Dieseth and Pastor Mike Honl officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Della went to be with her Lord on Thursday, January 25 at Avera St. Luke"s Hospital. She would have been 97 in six weeks. Visitation will be 3:00 to 5:00pm, Sunday with family present at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street. Della, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Lammle) Schauer was born March 4, 1921 and grew up on the family farm near Long Lake. She went to a country school in the township, then went to Ashley High School for two years of her schooling. The family moved to Lodi, California, to escape the drought and depression affecting Midwest farmers, and Della finished her high school at Lodi High School in Lodi, CA. The family moved back to South Dakota and Della put her plans to attend Wartburg College in Iowa on hold when she secured a job with the Agricultural Stabilization Office in Leola. It was a job she had for almost fifty years. While in Leola, she met Calvin Guthmiller after he returned from WWII and they were married on July 10, 1947. Together they raised their family in Leola where they were active in St. James Lutheran Church and the American Legion and Auxiliary. Della was in extension clubs and study clubs, as well as several bridge clubs. They lived in Leola until moving to Aberdeen in 1996. Della had the gifts of generosity and hospitality. She always had plenty of food on hand for visitors and no one ever went hungry. She was an outstanding cook and enjoyed sharing her meals with others. Della"s hobbies included cooking, baking, playing bridge, reading, knitting, gardening and being with her family and friends. As recently as Christmas, all sixteen children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were at her house to celebrate the holiday. Della and Calvin had three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mary Kay (Ron) Frey and daughter Andrea (Scott) Hunt; Allen Guthmiller and son Matthew; JoAnn (Russ) Ferrie and daughters Kristin and Rebecca (Mike) Honl and son John Ferrie. Della"s great-grandchildren are Dylan Ferrie and Lydia, Nora and Will Honl.
