Clifford Alvin Mettler April 1, 1917 ? April 11, 2006 Clifford Alvin Mettler was involved in Kern County agriculture for six decades. He passed away April 11, 2006 at his home in Pebble Beach, California. Born in Lodi, California, April 1, 1917, to parents, William H. Mettler and Katherine Schnaidt Mettler, Clifford was raised in Shafter, California with his brother Reynold, sisters Gladys and Alice. He attended Shafter High School, graduated from Beverly Hills High School and the University of Southern California. Clifford served in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps prior to Pearl Harbor. After his release from the military he returned to operate his ranch in Edison and later farmed in the Saco and Mettler areas. In the late 1940's, Clifford, along with his father and brother, developed open land in the Wheeler Ridge area where they each established their farms. This area later became known as Mettler Station. Clifford Mettler served on the Board of Directors of the Kern County Potato Growers Association. He was a member of the Stockdale Country Club, Bakersfield; Teton Pines Country Club, Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and a Founding Member of Spyglass Hill Golf Club, Pebble Beach. Residents of Bakersfield for 50 years, the Mettlers also maintained homes in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Pebble Beach, California. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Patricia Mettler, nephews and nieces: Brian Mettler, Jeffrey Mettler, Susanne Kalish, Craig Bury, Mark Bury, Katherine Bury, John McFarland, Judy Janzen, brother-in-law Harlan McFarland, and many cousins. A private graveside service was held April 20, 2006 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield, officiated by Reverend George Horner of Grace Lutheran Church.
