Father Carl Wise
A Mass of Christian Burial for Precious Blood Father Carl A. Wise, 76, was celebrated July 24 at St. Charles Center in Carthagena with Precious Blood Father Kenneth Schroeder officiating and Father Paul Wohlwend, as homilist. He died July 21 at Community Hospital in Coldwater following an apparent heart attack.
It will also be the celebratory Mass for Precious Blood Brother Augustine Kruck, who died July 20.
Born in Randolph, Ohio, he entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in 1943 and was ordained in 1955 at the former seminary, now St. Charles Center. He spent most of his life in parish ministry.
His first assignment, in 1955, was at St. Joseph Church in Dayton as an assistant pastor. He taught Brother candidates from 1960 to 1966 at the society?s then high school seminary, Brunnerdale, in Canton and returned to parish work in 1968 as an assistant pastor in Virginia.
His ministry in the archdiocese includes being pastor of Mary Help of Christians Church in Fort Recovery and at St. Teresa Church in Rockford, where he served until 1984.
Following time as a pastor in Kentucky, he was appointed parochial vicar at Immaculate Conception Church in Celina in 1988 and the following year he became a pastor in Florida until his last assignment as pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Montezuma in 1992.
While at Our Lady of Guadalupe, he instituted many programs, including the parish?s twinning relationship with Precious Blood Missionaries in La Labor, Guatemala. He was an avid reader, golfer and fisherman and active until the time of his death, including celebrating Mass on the morning of his death.
Poor health forced him to retire to St. Charles Center in 1998, but he continued to help with parish ministry in the northern area. He also operated a bookbindery at St. Charles and was featured in a Catholic Telegraph story July 25, 2003, by Jean Giesige, entitled "Bookbinder returns to craft after life as pastor."
He is survived by three brothers William of Hartville, Ohio, John of Atwater, Ohio, and James of Anchorage, Alaska. Two brothers, Ernest and Joseph, and a sister, Pauline Wise Strahler, preceded him in death. Interment was in the community cemetery.
