Ashley, ND-Funeral service for Calvin E. Weber, 82, of Ashley will be 2:00 pm, Friday, March 8, 2013 at Salem Reformed Church at Ashley. The Rev. James Grossman will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ashley City Cemetery with military graveside rites by Frank Piper American Legion Post #53.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Calvin died Monday, March 4, 2013 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck.
Calvin E. Weber was born in Java, SD on May 23, 1930 to Jacob and Margaret (Schorzmann) Weber. He was raised on the family farm in the Hosmer, SD area.
In July of 1951 he was inducted into the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. He earned the rank of Corporal also receiving the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service medal. Honorably discharged and returning to Ashley on July 1 of 1953, Calvin married Estella Neuhardt on July 14, 1953 within two weeks. He was a devoted husband to his wife for nearly 60 years. A true example of a "servant husband" for his sons to follow. Calvin was educated in the McPherson County schools, taught and confirmed in the tradition of the Reformed Church in the U.S. Calvin served in the Salem Reformed Church in various roles as youth leader, Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder. Calvin loved reading his Bible and would announce each time when he finished reading his bible in its entirety.
After Calvin's return from the military, he and his new bride moved to Aberdeen S.D., Edgeley and back to Ashley to be near Estella's family.
Calvin was blessed with being a very talented mechanic, machinist and inventor. His primary focus was repairing farm machinery and he took those responsibilities very seriously to insure timely and affordable repairs all done with excellence and no short cuts. After 40 years of being in this demanding field, he had an opportunity to be a part of opening up the first parts store in Ashley on Main Street. He loved the fact that he could continue to serve the local farmers through this business which was very important to him. His business approach was not just transactions but relationships. Calvin got great joy being an independent small business owner. As the farming world changed and competing with big business, his world changed and he closed the store. His pace of life changed at this point but "retirement" was not a word that he was familiar with and continued doing some part time work, namely newspaper delivering and senior citizen meal delivery.
Calvin's community involvement was marked most by being a part of the volunteer Ashley Fire Department. He enjoyed the fellowship of these great men and their service to the community.
His favorite past times were: creating mechanical wonders (tractor), fishing, gardening with his wife, and making home made sausage that he would ship to his sons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and two sisters. Remaining is one sister, Raymona Weron of Aberdeen, SD.
He also leaves to mourn his wife Estella of 59 years; his three sons; Steven (Cheryl), Baker, MT, Stanley (Alice), Nashville, TN, and Stewart (Nina), Bismarck, ND; grandchildren: Brian (Laura) Weber, Brooke (Ryan) Werdel, Benjamin, Aaron, Hannah, Jonathan Weber, Ryan, Kyle, and Matthew (Sarah) Weber and great grandchildren, Gage and Sawyer Weber, Macie, Jaden, Graycen and Jake Werdel.
Casketbearers are his grandsons: Brian Weber, Ryan Weber, Ben Weber, Kyle Weber, Aaron Weber and Matthew Weber.
Honorary Casketbearers are Dean Walker, Richard (Moose) Weber, Jim Sayler, Butch Mittlestead, and nephew John Weron.
The family is so grateful for the kind services of Ermalene Schlepp, Eva Becker, Christy Glaesman, Richard (Moose) Weber, Dean Walker, Lori Bichler of Ashley Medical Center, and the visits from their pastor, Rev. James Grossmann.
Memorial contribution may be made to Salem Reformed Church, Ashley Medical Center or Ashley Volunteer Fire Department.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
