Alvin was born in July 15, 1930 in Louisville, Kentucky. A Veteran of the United States Navy, Alvin entered the service in Louisville, KY on February 2, 1951. During the Korean Conflict, he served honorably aboard the Naval Vessel USS Cogswell. He was recognized for his dedication and love of his country and was awarded several medals for his time served. Among those accomplishments, Alvin was awarded the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Navy Occupation (Europe) Service Medal. He was honorably discharged January 11, 1955.
For many years Alvin was employed as a firefighter for the Galveston Fire Department. For well over 22 years he was a member in good standing with the Galveston Firemen?s Relief and Retirement Fund. During this time, his leadership abilities won him the honor of serving this organization as Chairman for most all of his membership time. It was his broad knowledge, leadership abilities, strength and perseverance to fight for his ?brothers? and their families that the Galveston Firefighters Pension Fund grew by metes and bounds. Alvin became a victim to Parkinson?s Disease and due to his failing health he retired from the Department after 28 years of service. Captain Silliman retired as a dedicated firefighter and Captain of the Galveston Fire Department, Station 5.
Alvin was a strong willed individual who fought hard to win over his battle with Parkinson?s. When not spending time with family, he enjoyed fishing until such time that his health prevailed. Alvin enjoyed baseball. He grew up to play a good ballgame, earning him a scholarship in sports baseball in order to further his education. He played baseball on the ?service? team for the United States Navy. He coached, for many years, both little and minor baseball leagues. He will be remembered for his vast baseball knowledge, wonderful ?fish? stories of who caught the biggest, longest, prettiest and best-tasting fish. And he will be remembered for the person he was. He will be sadly missed.
Alvin is preceded in death in by his parents, Edgar and Frances Silliman. He leaves behind many fond memories with his loving wife, Ruth Marquez-Silliman of Texas City, his children, Richard Silliman, Deborah Sue Silliman, Alvin Silliman, Jr., Carlos Silliman and wife, Teresa, Gina Nicollette Bishop and Jason Silliman, and also his step-son, Albert Marquez and wife, Deanna.
