Thomas remained in Sulz Russia and owned a Blacksmith Shop. On October 8, 1901, He married Blandina Hopfauf of Karlsrule. Thomas and Blandina left Sulz on November 25, 1907 with Florentina and John. Thomas and Blandina traveled by boat from Libow, Russia to Liverpool, England. They were quarantined in Liverpool for two weeks because the children had Chickenpox. The vessel was the "Cosier" (which has not been confirmed) They were routed frojm Halifax, Nova Scoti, which is where they landed to Mandan Michigan. Fortunately they located someone who spoke German and helped them to get on the train to Mandan, North Dakota. Later Thomas and Mr. John Geiger had a Blacksmith shop in the 100 block on Collins Avenue in Mandan and for several years he and Blandina and the children lived in a small house close to the shop before he built a two room house at 510 East Main St. in Mandan. Thomas and Mr. Geiger dissolved their partnership and Thomas worked in the railroad car shops until the strike in 1918. He and John Baron went to St. Paul to work, but didn't like the big city, so he came back to Mandan. He then found employment with the City of Mandan as a street cleaner. Later he became "superintendent of streets", a job he held until his retirement in 1943.
During his Blacksmith days, Thomas made a number of iron crosses. Several are to be found in the Mandan Union Cemetary and the Crown Butte Cemetary and one in the St. Mary's Cemetary in Bismark and one in Odense Catholic Cemetary. Near the Stebner plot in the Mandan Cemetary is an iron cross marker for Margaretha Behm (Boehm), died in 1909. Thomas's crosses are identified by the misspelling (Behm), the the backward letter "h" ( put the loop on the wrong side) and the shape of the arrows, and the backwards number "4" and "s". On January 18, 1921, he invented the Stebner Safety Lock, patent Number US 136-5861, and Canada number 200-600. He also invented several implements and tools but did not patent them. Thomas died August 8, 1948 of a Cerebral hemorrage. He is buried in the Mandan Cemetary.
