A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church for Thelma Fogleman Chappuis., who died at 12:05 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2012 at her residence in Crowley.
Msgr. Paul Metrejean will celebrate the Mass and the Committal Services at the Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, February 27, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. until service time. The Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.
Thelma Ione Fogleman Chappuis was born March 15, 1922 in Iota, Louisiana. After graduation from Crowley High School, she attended trade school for bookkeeping.
In October of 1941, she married Alvin Joseph Chappuis, Sr. They continued to live in Crowley until June 1942 when Al enlisted in the Air Force. They lived in Santa Ana, California, Tucson, Arizona, New Orleans and Gulfport, Mississippi. The couple moved to Lake Charles and finally back home to Crowley. She worked for the family business, Fogleman Truck Line, as bookkeeper/treasurer.
She spent her retirement enjoying time with her children and grandchildren. She spent many hours helping Al restore and repair antique clocks and furniture. Thelma dedicated her life to the community and demonstrated in many ways her deep and genuine love for the people of the city.
Thelma and Al received numerous awards for their service and dedication to the Church and the community including the Bishop's Medal in 1991, Outstanding Citizens of Crowley in 1992, and the Msgr. Sigur Service Award in 1998. Thelma was a member of St. Michael Parish Church where she was a Eucharistic minister and member of the Social Committee.
She worked for numerous years on the Crowley Cleanest City Committee and the Crowley Beautification Committee which was responsible for many of the colorful plantings in the parks and along the streets. Thelma was a member of the Crowley Garden Club having served as President, Vice-President and Secretary. She was a member of the Three-Ten Club, serving as Secretary. Thelma was a founding member of the Child Activity Club. She was a member of the Crowley Town Club where she worked on the Decorations Committee for the Mardi Gras Ball for many years.
She, along with Al, was instrumental in establishing the Crowley Christian Care Center. She spent many hours sorting clothing and other items to be distributed and sold at CCCC garage sales. Funds derived from Christian Care are used to buy food, medications, and other items to assist the needy in the community.
Thelma enjoyed cooking, gardening, and flower arranging. She loved to entertain friends and family at her home.
Survived by children Kay C. George and her husband Guy of Gainesville, TX; Carol C. LeBlanc and her husband Michael of Crowley, Renee C. Vondenstein and her husband, William of Crowley; Alvin Chappuis, Jr. of Denham Springs; and Annette C. Stelly and her husband Frank of Iota. She was proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 12 great grand children.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years Alvin Joseph Chappuis, Sr., her parents, Lois Murff Fogleman and Ernest Fogleman, Sr., her grandson Corey Stelly; granddaughters Lauren and Hanna Chappuis, her brother Rudy Fogleman, sisters Ruth Fogleman and Dorothy F. Collins.
Pallbearers will be six of her seven grandsons: Greg George, Christopher LeBlanc, Eric Vondenstein, Kyle Stelly, Kurt Vondenstein, and Wyatt Chappuis.
Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters Steffany George, Cheramie G. Villa-Abrille, Christy L. Padron, Greta V. Perkins, and Mallory Stelly and grandson Blake Chappuis.
