Indiana Messenger, Indiana, PA, July 16, 1931 TRAGIC DEATH IN HOME Mrs. Bessie Fyock, aged 41, wife of Bert Fyock, of Banks township, was almost instantly killed on Saturday evening about 8:30 o'clock by the accidental discharge of a barrel of an old shotgun in the Fyock home. The old gun, which had long been discarded as a fowling piece, had been used for the Fourth of July celebration. Saturday evening Mr. Fyock decided to clean the rust from the lock and in order to get it apart he found it necessary to drill a hole in the gun, but the drill broke off and to remove it he placed the barrel of the gun in the kitchen stove in an attempt to expand it by heat. Leaving the gun barrel in the stove he went to the springhouse to do some chores while waiting for it to expand. When Mrs. Fyock returned to the house from milking her cows she went to the kitchen to put some coal in the stove. Just as she turned to leave the stove the charge in the gun barrel exploded and the charge struck her, driving a wad of paper through her abdomen. Falling into the arms of her son, Roy, she died within a few minutes. Hearing the report of the explosion the husband rushed into the kitchen to find his wife dying. The heat had exploded an old load left in the gun barrel, which was supposed to have been empty. The tragic death came as a great shock to the community, where the deceased was held in high esteem. She held membership with the Montgomery church of Banks township, where the funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon, followed by interment in the church cemetery.
