Bio: Harry Gartner, 87, Bismarck, died Jan. 18, 2011, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Bismarck Baptist Church, with the Rev. Merle Hoots officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.Visitation will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.Harry was born Jan. 3, 1924, at Goodrich, the son of John and Eva (Buechler) Gartner. He grew up on the family farm and attended school near Goodrich. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was wounded in Luxembourg. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to farm near Goodrich. On March 29, 1948, he married Kathryn Baron at McClusky. In 1954, they moved to Bismarck, where he worked briefly as a guard at the Penitentiary before beginning his career at the post office.After his retirement in 1983, Harry and Kay enjoyed traveling, especially their winter stays in Arizona. Harry also enjoyed fishing and playing pool at the Senior Center. Harry was a member of the Southwest Trailblazers.Harry was privileged and honored and thoroughly enjoyed to be included on the recent Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.He is survived by his wife, Kay, Bismarck; two children, Lindell (George) Redington, Ellinwood, Kan., and Vonnie Gartner, Bismarck; grandchildren, Eva (Josh) Blecker, Dallas, Texas, Luke (Rose) Redington, Manhatten, Kan., and Alana Dudgeon and Alyssa Dudgeon, both of Bismarck; and two brothers, Reuben (Lorraine) Gartner, Lodi, Calif., and Willis (Ardella) Gartner, Bismarck.He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Herbert.
