Alternate last name: Wehner According to History of Noble County, Ohio, 1887, in 1839, Valentine Saling and John Warner came to Ohio from Philadelphia and settled in the southern part of Enoch Township, then in Monroe County. At the time of the 1850 census, 51 year old farmer John Warner lived in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Margaret (41) and children Caroline (13), Margaret (11), Adam (8), Elizabeth (6), John (4), Mary (2), and Anthony (2 months). Caroline was born in Pennsylvania; all the younger children were born in Ohio. The oldest four children attended school. The neighboring households in the census were those of schoolteacher Henry Hasting and farmer John Sterangel. In 1860, 60 year old Hessian-born farmer John Warner lived in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 50 year old wife, Margaret and their six children: Adam (18), John (14), Andrew (10), Joseph (8), Elizabeth (16), and Mary A. (12). All the children except Adam attended school. In 1880, retired farmer John (80) and Margaret (69) Warner lived in the Village of Fulda, Noble County, Ohio with a 15 year old servant named Mary Ann (last name illegible). Mary Ann may be the Mary Ann Warner who is listed as an adopted child by researcher JoAnn Cummings. Mary Ann, who was born in Ohio, attended school in 1880. According to the census, John was born in Hesse, and Margaret was born in West Virginia. Adjacent housholds belonged to schoolteacher Morris Alderhoven and grocer John Arnold. The following report appeared in The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 19 Jan 1882: Old Mr. Wehner [Warner] and John Hall are both in a dying condition,we may expect their death at almost any hour. Margaret Hildebrand [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born on 10 Oct 1809 in Hesse, Germany. She died 6 on 16 Jan 1886 in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., OH. The cause of death was old age. The 1850 census entry for Margaret (Hildebrand) Warner states that she could not read or write. He died 4 on 12 Jul 1865 in Chattanooga, TN. In 1860, 18 year old Adam Warner lived and worked on his parents' farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. From "The Demise of God's Country"" Adam was drafted by the Union Army near the end of the Civil War on February 14, 1865. Attached to Company G in the 186th OVS. He died in a hospital at Chattanooga, Tennessee on 12 Jul 1865. He is the only known Fulda resident to die in the Civil War.
