There is no proof that John Kress, husband of Jennie Gallagher and John Kress, son of Anton Kress are the same person. In support of this is the fact that the year of birth for John (husband of Jennie) in the 1900 census matches the year of birth of John, son of Anton. Further research needs to be done to confirm or refute the relationship. At the time of the 1900 census, John (33) and Jennie (34) Kress owned a farm in Independence Twp., Washington County, Ohio. Living with them were their children Fredrick (9), Allice ( 7), and Bernard (4), and in-laws Patrick (81) and Catherine (80) Gallagher. Also living in the household was a 17 year old servant named Maggie Melite. The census stated that John and the children were born in Ohio. John's parents were natives of Germany. Jennie's parents were from Ireland. John's month of birth is faint and illegible in the census, but the year of birth is 1867. In 1910, John Kress (44) still lived in Independence Township with his wife Jennie (44), children Fred (19), Alice (17), Bernard (13, Clarence (8), Charley (6) and Agnes (11 mos.), and his widowed father-in-law Patrick Gallagher (93). According to the census, John's parents were born in the United States. In 1920, farmer John Kress (53) and his wife Jennie (54) lived in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with their children Bernard (23), Charles (18), Clarence (15), and Agnes (10). Clarence and Agnes attended school. Obituary: JOHN KRESS DIES Funeral services will be held at 9 oclock Thursday morning at the St. Johns Catholic Church at Miltonsburg for John Kress, 73, who died Tuesday [18 Oct 1939] following a few weeks illness. Surviving are his widow and the following children: Bernard Kress of Woodsfield, Charles Kress of Mansfield, Mrs. Karl Carlus and Mrs. Fred Keller of Marietta, and Clarence Kress of Bridgeport. Mrs. and Mrs. Kress celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home about one month ago. At the same time, their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Carlus, celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. The services will be in charge of Rev. George F. Drescher.
